The Ghana Premier League has always thrived on homecomings, and the 2026/27 season is no different. Ahead of kickoff on September 4, clubs have turned to familiar faces – former champions, ex-academy gems and local heroes who left for stints abroad or struggled for game time – to add experience and instant connection with fans.
1. Issah Ibrahim – Winger – Medeama SC
A direct and explosive winger, Issah makes his return to the GPL from Latvia. He joins a heavily reinforced Medeama side that has been the busiest in the window, bringing in players like Etse Dogli, Emmanuel Annor and Emmanuel Fobi from Georgia’s Dila Gori. Medeama are banking on his European exposure to add cutting edge on the flanks.
2. Gideon Waja – Midfielder – Port City FC
For newly promoted Port City FC, experience is gold. The club has raided the market for leadership and found it in former WAFA midfield general Gideon Waja. Known for his composure, work rate and eye for a pass, Waja will be tasked with guiding a young squad through its debut Premier League season.
3. Dominic Nsobila – Midfielder – Hearts of Oak SC
The Phobians have mixed youth and steel, and Nsobila fits the second category perfectly. Listed among Hearts’ key additions alongside goalkeeper Vicente Anane and forward Mamadou Kourouma, the defensive midfielder returns to the big stage to add bite to the Hearts midfield after impressing in the lower tiers.
4. Danlad Ibrahim – Goalkeeper – Asante Kotoko
Perhaps the most emotional return. Kotoko have brought back goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad on a two-year deal as part of a major rebuild. The former Kotoko number one and Black Stars shot-stopper knows the pressure of Kumasi and will compete with new Moroccan arrival Abdel Wadie Mourad for the starting spot.
5. Richard Boadu – Midfielder – Asante Kotoko SC
Double homecoming in Kumasi. Boadu, the 28-year-old central midfielder, has made a striking return to Asante Kotoko on a deal until June 2028. He previously wore red between 2021 and 2023 and won the Ghanaian championship in 2021/22. Kotoko are bringing back a proven winner to restore that title-winning mentality.
6. Faisal Chawetey – Attacker – Swedru All Blacks
Swedru All Blacks are back in the top flight and have gone all out in recruitment, adding over a dozen players including Michael Abrokwah and Prince Arthur. Faisal Chawetey, a powerful attacker known for his hold-up play, is one of their statement signings as they look to stay up and upset the giants.
7. Shawkan Hunalf Mohammed – Defensive Midfielder – Aduana FC
Aduana FC were among the most aggressive clubs in the window. Alongside Stephen Amankona, Samuel Tenedu and Emmanuel Abban, they have signed Shawkan Hunalf Mohammed. The defensive midfielder returns to Ghana with a reputation for breaking up play and will be key to Aduana’s traditionally solid structure.
8. Stephen Amankona – Forward – Aduana FC
He is back where he became a star. Amankona, a former GPL Goal King and Aduana fan favourite, returns to Dormaa after spells abroad. His inclusion in Aduana’s list of free-agent additions has already excited supporters. If he rediscovers his scoring touch, Aduana become instant title contenders.
9. Abdul Jalilu – Centre-Back – Heart of Lions
Heart of Lions have quietly built a resilient squad. Among their additions from the free-agent market is veteran centre-back Abdul Jalilu. His leadership and aerial dominance will be crucial for a Lions side that finished strong last season and is now targeting a top-four push.
10. Dominic Amponsah – Attacker – Medeama SC
Medeama’s attack gets a second homecoming in Dominic Amponsah. While the club has focused on foreign goalkeeping and wing options, Amponsah offers local knowledge and versatility across the front three. He joins a forward line that now has depth, pace and physicality.
