Former Ghana international and ex-Borussia Dortmund player Ibrahim Tanko has been named Coach of the Year at the annual Kuntu Blankson Awards, following his outstanding campaign with Medeama SC in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. Tanko is set to be honoured for guiding the Tarkwa-based club to league glory, capping a remarkable season in which Medeama emerged as champions and secured qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
Tanko’s achievement marks another significant milestone in a coaching career that has steadily grown in prominence since his transition from playing into management. His work at Medeama has been characterised by tactical organisation, consistency and an ability to get the best out of his squad, qualities that proved decisive as the club battled through a competitive Premier League campaign to reclaim the league title.
The award also provides recognition for Tanko’s impressive journey in football, having represented Ghana at international level and enjoyed a playing career in Europe that included a spell with German giants Borussia Dortmund. His experience on the field has since translated into the technical area, where he has continued to develop his reputation as one of Ghana’s promising homegrown coaches.
The Kuntu Blankson Sports Foundation had earlier announced its decision to honour Tanko as the best coach of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, specifically citing his role in leading Medeama to league glory. The recognition comes at an important point in Tanko’s career, with Medeama now turning its attention to continental football.
Following the league triumph, Tanko has already set his sights on the CAF Champions League, with Medeama drawn against DR Congo giants TP Mazembe in the preliminary stage. The coach has expressed the ambition of taking the Ghanaian champions deep into the competition, setting the stage for another demanding chapter after a domestic campaign that has now earned him the Kuntu Blankson Coach of the Year accolade.
