Ghana’s Black Maidens have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The Maidens showed determination and attacking intent throughout the encounter, but had to withstand a late Argentine comeback before sealing their progress in the penalty shootout.
Ghana took the lead in the 16th minute through Jessica Appiah Asamoah, who put the West African side ahead and gave them an early advantage in the contest.

The Black Maidens dominated large spells of the game and created several opportunities to extend their lead. However, their inability to convert numerous chances left Argentina within touching distance as the match progressed.
Despite Ghana’s control and attacking pressure, Argentina found a late equaliser in the 86th minute through Mercedes Diz, forcing the game to a penalty shootout after the score remained 1-1 at the end of normal time.

With a place in the last eight at stake, the Black Maidens held their nerve from the spot, converting their penalties to secure a hard-fought 5-4 victory and spark celebrations among the Ghanaian contingent.
The result marks a significant achievement for Ghana’s young side, who have demonstrated resilience and fighting spirit through their journey in this competition.
The Black Maidens will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face either Japan or Kenya as they continue their quest for glory at the tournament in Morocco.
