“YOU ARE CHAMPIONS”: SPANISH AMBASSADOR BACKS BLACK CHALLENGE’S WORLD CUP DREAM

Spain’s Ambassador to Ghana, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, has pledged his support to Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.

The Ambassador visited the team at the Mendiata Hotel in Accra, where he met 15 players and members of the technical staff. He told them he would remain an advocate and partner for the team.

“For me, you are allies,” he said.

He acknowledged that his loyalty would lie with Spain if the two countries met in a World Cup final, but stressed that the larger issue is equal rights for persons with disabilities.

“At the end of the day, sport is important, but the rights of persons with disabilities are more important. You are already very good, and I wish you all the best,” he said.

He described the players as champions who deserve every support.

Foster Kwarteng, President of the Ghana Amputee Football Association, thanked the Ambassador for his long-standing backing of disability sport and his work with the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana.

“What you’ve done for the National Paralympic Committee and persons with disabilities, I personally cannot thank you enough. You’ve always opened your doors to us, and I thank you for that,” Kwarteng said.

The Black Challenge has been drawn in Group D in Mexico alongside Colombia, Angola and Iraq. The team arrives as back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations champions and will be aiming for a first world title.

As the players prepare to carry Ghana’s flag onto the world stage, the Ambassador’s visit underlined a message that sport, opportunity and national recognition should rest on dignity and equal citizenship.
