Former Black Stars striker Abdul Majeed Waris has highlighted the selfless efforts of members of the Majeed Waris Foundation (MWF) as the organisation continues its work to improve the lives of vulnerable people in his home community and surrounding areas in northern Ghana.
In a post on social media, Waris expressed appreciation to his core executive team and supporters of the foundation for their commitment to sustainable community development.
According to Waris, the foundation recently launched a new initiative aimed at supporting deprived and vulnerable elders in the community, guided by a Dagbon principle that “charity begins at home.”
Following consultations with the foundation’s core executive team—Haruna, Fatawu, Sia and Senior Baki—the Majeed Waris Foundation undertook discreet groundwork within Waris’s home community to identify people who needed assistance.
The exercise resulted in the identification of 16 deserving community elders, alongside a few close friends, who were found to be in need of support.
Waris said the initiative was designed not only to provide immediate assistance but also to protect the dignity and daily sustenance of beneficiaries while encouraging self-reliance and helping them meet the needs of themselves and their dependants.
The former Ghana international stressed that although the foundation’s existing commitment to orphanages, educational institutions and persons living with disabilities remains unchanged, extending support to vulnerable elders represents an important expansion of its mission.
He described the intervention as a modest step with the potential to create a significant ripple effect, particularly by supporting elders who continue to play important roles as sources of wisdom, moral guidance and inspiration for younger generations.
“Our contributions may be a modest step, but they yield a profound compound effect—securing the livelihoods of those who actively guard, guide, and mentor our next generation,” Waris said in the post.
Waris also extended his appreciation to the foundation’s dedicated team and all supporters whose trust, commitment and ideas continue to drive its community initiatives.
He noted that the collective efforts of the team demonstrate the importance of giving back to the communities that helped shape individuals, while ensuring that vulnerable members of society are not left behind.
Through the initiative, the Majeed Waris Foundation is seeking to complement its broader charitable activities with a stronger focus on the wellbeing of elderly people in Dagbon and surrounding communities, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and community-centred support.
