Players from 23 African countries are set to feature in this season’s UEFA Champions League, highlighting the continent’s growing influence in European club football.
Morocco leads the representation with 11 players, followed by Senegal with 10 and Nigeria with nine.
Ivory Coast has eight players in the competition, while Algeria has six and Cameroon five. Mali has four representatives, with Ghana following with three.
Rwanda, Angola, DR Congo, Guinea, Gabon, Gambia and South Africa will each have two players competing in Europe’s premier club competition.
Seven other countries — Mauritania, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Mozambique — have one player each, while Cape Verde also has a single representative.
The figures underline the continued contribution of African footballers to the UEFA Champions League and the continent’s strong presence on the European stage.
