Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku says the association has introduced a number of interventions to make participation in the Colts League more accessible ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Speaking at the official launch of the new campaign in Prampram on Tuesday, Okraku said the measures are aimed at reducing the financial burden on Colts clubs across the country.
Among the interventions is free player registration and digital licensing for up to 90 players per club, covering 30 players each in the U-13, U-15 and U-17 boys’ categories.
The GFA has also scrapped referee fees for Colts clubs.
“These include free player registration and digital licenses for up to 90 players per club, 30 players each in U-13, U-15, and U-17 boys’ categories,” Okraku said.
“We have also removed referee fees for Colts clubs,” he added.
Okraku said the GFA’s decision to revive Colts football in 2020 was aimed at rebuilding a structured pathway for young players, from community football through the regional level and into elite development.
According to him, the pathway now provides a route from grassroots football to the national teams and the professional game.
The GFA President also revealed that 859 active Colts clubs are currently operating across Ghana’s 10 football regions.
The Ashanti Region has the highest number, with 245 clubs, followed by Greater Accra with 216.
The Northern and Brong Ahafo regions have 98 clubs each, while the Central Region has 90 and the Western Region has 50.
The Eastern Region has 26 clubs, with the Upper East recording 15, Upper West 11 and Volta 10.
The latest measures form part of the GFA’s efforts to strengthen grassroots football and create a more accessible development pathway for young players across the country.
