According to Prof. George Kuntu Blankson, President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, will win hands down if he decides to contest for a third term in office. The academic projects an overwhelming endorsement across the GFA’s electoral college, with massive support from the key voting blocs.
Per Prof. Kuntu’s research, the breakdown of projected votes shows 95% support from Premier League clubs, 90% from Division One clubs, and 99% from the Regional Football Associations. The poll further projects 100% backing from the Women’s Premier League, Coaches Representatives, and Referees Representatives respectively.
The projection comes after the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram on August 12, 2025, amended the association’s statutes to extend the presidential term limit from two to three four-year terms. The amendment was approved by 114 votes to 6, with 3 abstentions, making the incumbent, who was first elected in 2019 and re-elected unopposed in 2023, eligible to run again when his current term ends in 2027.
Reacting to questions about a third term after the Congress, President Okraku declined to declare his intentions, stating that his immediate focus remains on completing reforms and improving the domestic game. His posture has not stopped the national debate, with supporters citing stability since 2019 and critics, including former Vice President George Afriyie, vowing to resist any third-term bid on grounds of good governance.
Prof. Kuntu Blankson’s projection, if it holds, indicates that any challenger in 2027 will face a steep mountain to climb. It suggests that despite the heated public discourse, the incumbent retains near-total loyalty within the structures that decide GFA elections.
